Artist Statement

With the sense that we are all connected to the Creator, the door of creativity and possibility are wide open for emerging mixed media artist Maria Geary.  With that said, it is with purposeful intent that she creates so she can stay connected.  An early riser, her morning routine starts with “coffee, Jesus and devotions.”  The scriptures that speak to her are those that she meditates on when beginning her daily work.

In approaching each piece, regardless of the medium (currently textiles and acrylics) she refers to the colors and images of her favorite inspiration:  nature.  As the piece begins to develop, the dance of color, thought and scripture play back and forth in her mind pushing forward until a finished piece is in view.

As a self-taught artist, she reminds herself often of Andre Gide’s quote, “Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better.”  Herein lies the paradox of most artists of knowing when enough is enough.  A day of not allowing any changes made to the work (she won’t even look at it), usually tells her what the next steps are.  This period allows not only a fresh set of eyes and mindset, but a pause to reflect if what she envisioned came to be.  She admits this reflection is, “not as accurate as I’d like it to be, but it allows me to step away and perhaps see other possibilities or inspiration for a new piece of work.”
